Safety & security film explained

What safety film really does — and what it does not.

Last reviewed 6 August 2026Technical reviewer: WTC Films Technical Team

Safety film does not stop glass breaking. What it does is hold the broken pieces together, so instead of falling as dangerous shards the glass stays largely in place. That reduces injury risk and, with thicker films, helps delay forced entry.

Thickness and standards

Thicker films (for example 175 micron and above) and, for security uses, edge anchoring increase performance. Micron thickness alone is not a certification. We only publish a British or European standard where the specific film and installed system have valid supporting test documentation — and we will never describe a film as "bomb blast resistant" or claim glass is "unbreakable" without the applicable classification.
